Black Movies Hit Mark in 2010

Black sitcoms may be on the verge of dying, but black movies look alive and well in 2010.

Last Friday, Death at a Funeral hit national movie theaters and raked in over $16 million during its first weekend, according to boxofficemojo.com. Directed by Neil LaBute, the film's star-studded cast features Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Danny Glover and Loretta Devine just to name a few notables. Based off the 2007 British film of the same title, the hilarious comedy revolves around wild secrets uncovered after the passing of the family patriarch.

And last month, writer, producer and director Tyler Perry released a sequel to his 2007 blockbuster film, Why Did I Get Married. Like the first installment, Why Did I Get Married Too? has generated big numbers also. During its opening weekend, it grossed over $29 million, according to boxofficemojo.com. Malik Yoba, Janet Jackson, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott and Michael Jai White all reprised their roles in the heartfelt and emotional film.

Throughout the years, especially the last few, plenty of films aimed primarily at black moviegoers have winded up as duds.

Remember My Baby's Daddy and Soul Plane in 2004? What about 2007's Where's My Caddy?

With the releases of black films like Why Did I Get Married Too? and Death at a Funeral in 2010 and Precious in late 2009, the movie industry's now hitting the mark. Black audiences are validating they want the same wide-ranging viewing enjoyments of others. They're showing they want more than hip-hop and gangster tales when they're forking out $10 for admission and $5 for popcorn to check out movies nowadays.

On May 14, Just Wright, a black romantic comedy, is slated to open nationwide in movie theaters. The film tells the love story of physical therapist Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah) who helps basketball star Scott McKnight (Common) recover from injury. NBA superstars Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade join in on the entertainment and the stellar cast that also includes Paula Patton, Pam Grier and Phylicia Rashad.

Even Lottery Ticket, which is scheduled for release August 20, looks foreign to the films typically targeted to black audiences. Rap star Bow Wow plays Kevin Carson, who wins $370 million in a nationwide lottery. The problem however is, because it's a holiday weekend, Kevin has to wait three days until he can cash in his ticket while his opportunistic neighbors are now on the prowl for a share of his winnings. Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Brandon T. Jackson and Natari Naughton all star in the summertime flick.

Some black viewers have been asking for better movies for years. If 2010's any indication, it seems the movie industry's thankfully listening now.

Could Funerals Become Movie Highlights of Someone's Life?

This is the concept behind the 2004, movie "The Final Cut" the movie is science fiction, but could it become a reality. The concept of placing chips in the brain is something that has been discussed for multiple reasons. Certainly that is something that could happen. In the movie a computer chip is placed in a person's brain at birth for a high cost. Due to the high cost this is something that is reserved for the rich. Anyway the chip will record with both sound and vision every event of that person's life. In a way it's like the ultimate big brother although the footage can't be viewed in a safe way until the person dies. When someone does die the chip is removed and using a computer editing process is condensed to highlights of that person's life. In order to determine which parts to use family members are interviewed.
As the movie shows if this technology was available it would create all kinds of problems. Such as, how to edit someone's life, the tendency is to portray everyone as a saint. Generally I am of the opinion that someone should be portrayed in the way they spent most of their life doing. For instance does the serial killer deserve to be remembered as a saint and does the man who abused his children deserve to have this edited out. These are all questions posed to the editor.

The movie suggests that the person should be made aware of their chip on their 21st birthday. Another question is how would someone live their life if they knew any part of it can be shown at their funeral. The positive is that funerals really will be celebrations of life. The biggest problem I see is that the editing invariably would not be accurate and wouldn't show the kind of image that someone may remember. Though I see how this possible technology would take a lot of mystery of life away and even mystery of how people die.

Honestly though if this technology was available I don't think I would want it. Certain things in our life we have the right to keep private forever. Also there may be an increase in crime to unearth information. For instance murders to find out what's on someone's chip. Overall it's an interesting movie with real food for thought. The movie is called "The Final Cut" and stars Robin Williams.
